1. Why Do Leaves Change Color?
Throughout spring and summer, leaves act as solar panels, using chlorophyll to produce food via photosynthesis. Chlorophyll gives leaves their green pigment.
As daylight hours decrease in autumn, trees receive a biological signal to stop producing chlorophyll. As the green pigment breaks down, other pigments take over:
