Healthy soil is the foundation of a healthy landscape, and here in Western North Carolina, our soil can present some unique challenges.
From the mountains of Asheville and Black Mountain to the surrounding foothills, our landscapes can have heavy clay, rocky soil, steep slopes, and areas affected by erosion and runoff. Understanding the soil on your property is an important first step toward creating a landscape that thrives.

So, what makes soil “good”?
Healthy soil has a balance of organic matter, minerals, air, and water. It should be loose enough for roots to grow and water to move through while still holding the moisture and nutrients plants need.
Adding organic matter, such as compost or natural mulch, can help improve soil structure and support the microorganisms that keep soil healthy. This is especially important in areas where soil has become compacted or depleted.
Healthy soil is also full of life. Earthworms, insects (like the Carolina dung beetle, pictured here), fungi, and microorganisms all contribute to nutrient cycling and help break down organic material.

At A Lawn A Day Landscaping, LLC, we know that a beautiful landscape starts below the surface. Understanding your property's soil can help you choose the right native plants, like coneflowers, pink muhly grass, or sourwood trees, address drainage and erosion concerns, and build a healthier landscape from the ground up.
Good landscapes start with good soil — especially here in Western North Carolina.
